Sensors’ Top 50 Products of 2006

28 Jan 2007 karaltan Yorum yapın

We see a lot of new products over the course of a year, in a variety of venues. From all the new products we heard about in 2006, here’s our selection of those that we found the most interesting. You’ll find a brief description of the product and some comments on what qualities attracted our attention. If your interest is piqued, please check out the online version of this article, which provides links to the vendors mentioned.

Wireless Sensor Networks Lecture

25 Jan 2007 karaltan Yorum yapın

Contents
Wireless sensor networks are computer networks designed for collecting distributed sensor data. For this goal the hardware is stripped to the bare minimum. So, other computer networks must be used and comfortable solutions like WLAN 802.11 or Bluetooth cannot be used, here. The main reason is the lack of hardware and the energy constraints. Since wireless sensor motes (the nodes of a sensor network) are usually powered by batteries and have to work for months or years.

The lecture is organized as follows

Introduction
Architecture: hardware architecture, network architecture
Communication protocols: Physical layer, MAC protocols, Link-layer, Naming and addresing, time synchronization, localization and positioning, topology control, routing protocols, data-centric and content-based networking, quality of service
3 hours of lecture and 1 hour exercise (3V+1Ü SWS)
Special lecture for master students for computer science
ECTS: 6

How Motes Work

07 Jan 2007 karaltan Yorum yapın

mote-1.jpgOver the last year or so you may have heard about a new computing concept known as motes. This concept is also called smart dust and wireless sensing networks. It seems like just about every issue of Popular Science, Discover and Wired today contains a blurb about some new application of the mote idea. For example, the military plans to use them to gather information on battlefields, and engineers plan to mix them into concrete and use them to internally monitor the health of buildings and bridges.

There

are thousands of different ways that motes might be used, and as people get familiar with the concept they come up with even more. It is a completely new paradigm for distributed sensing and it is opening up

a fascinating new way to look at computers.

In this article, you will have a chance to understand how motes work and see many of the possible applications of the technology. Then we will look at a MICA mote — an existing technology that you can buy to experiment with this unique way of sensing the world.
